2. They seem to be getting skimpier!

We are seeing a lot of "gluteal" exposure these days! Also, the women are wearing some pretty revealing costumes. I know they are usually filled in with neutral-colored material, but holy cow. Lots of plunging necklines and back and side exposure.

There was an ice dancer during the team finals (maybe from Canada?) who had on a "dress" with her entire back and one side exposed. Whew.

3. Women athletes are often clothed in revealing uniforms.

I think it is inappropriate. I have always cringed at young girls in gymnastics leotards while they do the splits and cameramen never fail to publish the pictures taken from the open side of the split rather than the long leg view (if you know what I mean).

These are young girls being exploited in my view. I have never liked it. There is no reason, other than male sexual desires, to dress them that way when the men wear shorts in gymnastics and do just fine. In fact, women cyclist seem to be able to do their sport in shorts.

I completely agree with you. And I'm not embarrassed about my objection.

Though comparing what cyclists do to what gymnasts and ice skaters do is hardly a fair comparison. And it seems like an argument that we don't put every female athlete in a skimpy costume.

7. The comparison is male gymnasts in shorts to female gymnasts in tights.

The reason to bring up cyclists is to question why female gymnasts don't wear shorts the way female cyclists do. The post wasn't comparing the sports—what the athletes do—at all. What a funny way to read it.

is because they have different movement requirements. Cycling requires movement of the legs on one plane. Gymnastics does not. The shorts that men wear in gymnastics are not lose fitting.

12. The comment was to point out the difference between girl's/women's uniforms and men's uniforms.

Gymnastics - Girls wear skimpy uniforms, men don't.
Beach Volleyball - Girls wear skimpy uniforms, men don't.
Ice skating - Girls wear skimpy uniforms, men don't.
Cheerleading - Girls wear skimpy uniforms, men don't.
etc, etc, etc.

That's the point I'm making.

There is no reason, other than men wanting to enjoy the sexualization of girls/women. Girls can perform their sports in lycra tights/shorts.

I would like to see women participating in sports alongside men without the sexualization of women's bodies. Just sayin'.

13. Well then, the shorts that women would wear in gymnastics wouldn't have to be loose-fitting either.

Movement requirements WITHIN THE SPORT OF GYMNASTICS are similar whether you're a man or a woman.

In the way that movement requirements in cycling are similar whether you're a man or a woman. And both sexes wear shorts in that sport.

And they aren't shorts, but that's a different discussion.

And I'd be fine with women and men wearing the same thing in gymnastics. I don't know where the opposite suddenly became the point people thought I was defending. Better yet, we should allow the athletes to decide what they need for their sport to be most effective and protected (well, football and hockey we would need some people with knowledge of how to protect the noodle).

Skaters and gymnasts and often ballroom dancers are usually wearing "skimpy" costumes grafted onto a bodysuit that is tights and the equivalent of a flesh-colored one-piece swimsuit that is designed to "vanish" and look like skin. A lot of these costumes wouldn't stay on during frenetic movement if they didn't make them this way. Sometimes the performers are actually covered neck to wrists to ankles.

That said, look at the way men vs. women dress in competition dance. Guys wear suits or waistcoats and long pants, and the women have dresses that are nearly half dresses.

You assemble a sports competition that is 75% dance routine, and is subjectively judged and you invite approaches to make the competitor more eye catching.

IMO, with artificial intelligence inroads, you could make ice skating objectively measured and then the contestants could all be wearing sweatsuits and it wouldn't affect the scoring.

On top of that, how many figure skating judges are ogling old men, and you have your answer.

I see that, I think about how cold they might be to wear so few clothes. Male athletes have it good to not have to reveal as much skin and be freezing.
