The minor leagues' new extra innings rule led to a bizarre victory for the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night.
The Philadelphia Phillies' Class A affiliate had no hits and no walks against the Tampa Tarpons, yet it beat the New York Yankees' Florida State League club 1-0.
Clearwater took advantage of a rule introduced this year that places a runner at second base at the start of each extra inning to cut down on marathon games. The rule has been criticized by baseball traditionalists. On Monday, it made it possible for Tampa to lose despite a nearly perfect game.

(65,000 posts). . .but i don't like this idea, either. For a minor league game, if we're going to break tradition, why not just allow ties? It's the minor leagues, for goodness sake. 7 Inning Game. If no winner, it goes 9. If nobody is ahead after 9, game over and it's a tie.
It's better than changing the concept of the game itself, i think.
And, if Manfred wants to speed up the game, ban batting gloves with tightening straps. Even if a hitter wanted to adjust a regular glove, it would take a second. This unpeeling the velcro, and restrapping both gloves on a pitch on which the hitter didn't even swing wastes WAY more time that could be saved.
