Former 49er/Raider Aldon Smith agrees to plea deal, pleads no contest to two charges

Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges Monday as part of a plea deal with San Francisco prosecutors to settle his domestic violence case from earlier this year.

Smith, 29, pleaded no contest to violating a court order and false imprisonment and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Smith will be permitted to serve the sentence at an inpatient alcohol and drug treatment center.

Smith also was mandated to attend 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling and must complete 25 hours of community service.

He originally faced charges of domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism stemming from a March 3 incident involving his then-fiancée.

When he turned himself into the S.F. Sheriff's department earlier this year he had a blood alcohol level of .40. That's five times the legal limit in California -- a level close to causing death.

Dude might have had an awesome career. Is he just fucked-up or is it something more? I also wonder how much a factor CTE has on exacerbating existing issues? Disturbing precedent coming from the York-owned 49ers too (Smith, Ruben Foster).

They have to find a way to detect it and try to treat it while they are still alive. Many kill themselves because they can't cope with the effects.

or if Smith was abused as a kid, or anything else. I'm sure there are lots of young to mid 20-somethings in the NFL in early stages of CTE right now, but they're not acting out-of-control like Smith.
