Kyler Murray wins the Heisman

Kyler Murray has been named the country's top college football player in what could be his final season playing the sport.

Murray, who threw for over 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns for Oklahoma this year, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in New York over fellow quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State. Although Murray has another season of eligibility remaining and is also considered a potential first-round pick in the NFL draft, he has said he is prepared to give up football to focus on baseball, after the Oakland Athletics selected him ninth overall in this year's MLB draft.

"This is crazy," Murray said in accepting the award. "This is an honor. Something that I'll never forget, something I'll always cherish for the rest of my life."

Murray follows in the footsteps of Baker Mayfield, who won the Heisman while with the Sooners last year. It is the first time since 1945-46 that two different players from the same school won the award in back-to-back years (not counting Reggie Bush's vacated Heisman for USC in 2005, which followed his teammate Matt Leinart).

He could languish in the minor leagues for a few years -- buses, cheap motel rooms -- and it's no guarantee he makes The Show.

Or he could be starting in the NFL by mid 2019.

The NFL team that drafts him could make a very convincing case.

I agree -- baseball is the healthier option.

Could he really become a starting quarterback in the NFL? 5'9" seems very short for a quarterback. From what I have heard 6' is at least a little short for the NFL. Also, I read that he was given a $4.66 million signing bonus. Do guys who get multimillion dollar signing bonuses go on to play in the minor leagues? Also, I read that he was heading to spring training in, I think, January. If he is going to spring training has he already made it to the league?

The Tide defenses are not kind to Heisman winners. Ask Pat Sullivan and Gino Torretta, among others who also got close to winning it. None fare well against the Tide D. It plays into Alabama's hand that he won instead of Tua.

My prediction: Alabama vs. Clemson in Santa Clara. I won't bet against Dabo because he's home folks.
