Sources: Redskins set to hire Ron Rivera as coach; fire president Bruce Allen

The Washington Redskins are expected to hire former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera as their next head coach, barring unforeseen developments, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

The news comes on the same day that Washington parted ways with team president Bruce Allen.

The Redskins hope the moves can revive a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game in 14 seasons and faces plummeting attendance.

Rivera becomes the seventh head coach hired by owner Dan Snyder. Because Rivera, 57, is a minority candidate, the Redskins could fulfill the Rooney Rule immediately. Carolina fired Rivera on Dec. 3 with a 5-7 record, and he was viewed as a strong candidate for any opening.

I think this is a good hire. Speaking as a Cardinals fan you could do a lot worse than Ron Rivera.

Rivera is a really good coach and should have no problem getting another job this year or next. The Washington job is about as bad a job out there, with limited talent, a meddling owner, and a depressed fan base. It's a recipe for failure.

Other than the money, I can't see what it offers for Rivera, who is bound to be fired again. And even if that failure isn't his fault, you rarely see coaches get a third chance in the NFL.

He runs the 4-3. He used to be a defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for Ron Rivera in Carolina. Wilks has been to two Super Bowls as a defensive coach.

Report: Steve Wilks will not join the Redskins as defensive coordinator

Defensive coordinator job still a question

By Bill-in-Bangkok on December 31, 2019 9:54 am

Although it had been widely anticipated that Steve Wilks would join Ron Rivera in Washington as his defensive coordinator, per John Keim, that won’t be happening.

Earlier Reports:

Michael Phillips reports that Ron Rivera plans to bring Steve Wilks to Washington to be the new defensive coordinator for the Redskins. Wilks was Rivera’ defensive backs during his final season as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator. He was also Rivera’s DBs coach with the San Diego Chargers from 2009-2010. Rivera became the Carolina Panthers head coach in 2011, and Wilks joined him there a year later to once again be his DBs coach. In 2015 he added Assistant Head Coach to his title, and then in 2017 he was bumped up to Asst HC/Defensive Coordinator. Wilks parlayed that into a head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals, but he was fired after one season. He spent this season as the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator, but HC Freddie Kitchens was fired yesterday.
