(2,220 posts)I grew up in a car family. My grandad raced midget cars as a young man and, as a young woman, I worked the pit for a friend who was a drag racer. We were always into racing, especially stock car racing, which is what NASCAR was known as before it was cool. We were so hard core we freakin listened to races on the radio! Richard Petty was king in those days, and I worshipped him as a child.
By the time I was in my early twenties, I had Black friends, and I was becoming aware and sensitive to things, especially the culture I grew up in and how different it was from the world I wanted to live in. Racing represented racist hillbilly rednecks in my eyes. I wanted nothing more to do with it. I will never again be a fan, but this moment touched me deeply and for some reason brought back some memories.
No longer a NASCAR fan, but a Bubba fan.

(11,443 posts)spread started increasing in March. Maybe Richard has changed for the good. First by hiring Bubba, and then by flying down to Talladega Monday to show his support.
