Troy Aikman and Joe Buck perfectly slam flyovers amid COVID-19 pandemic on hot mic

As Raymond James Stadium in Tampa is allowing just 25 percent fan capacity, the two longtime announcers didn’t understand why a flyover was happening at all.

Aikman: “That’s a lot of jet fuel just to do a little flyover.”

Buck: “That’s your hard-earned money and your tax dollars at work.”

Aikman: “That stuff ain’t happening with [a] Kamala-Biden ticket, I’ll tell you that right now partner.”

The crews supposedly take the opportunity to "learn" navigation and timing skills, etc, yada, yada, yada....

As the first wave of the pandemic was hitting this past spring, the AFB down the road organized a flyover by B-2s to area hospitals as a salute to medical workers. On the way in, they flew west five miles south of my house, turned to head north two miles from my house, made the rounds of hospitals, and on their return, flew directly OVER my house--I was able to look up and see the bomb bay doors of the planes. And it was astonishing how LOUD they were! They may be impervious to radar, but you'd have to be fence-post DEAF not to hear the ROARRR they produce! They sound like a giant herd of buffalo running across the plains.

I fully expect wingnut heads to explode and these two to be savaged for this. SMH.

But they kept it real, and I’m shocked.

It's sort of an implicit, "We Got this, enjoy the game."

I don't get bomber flyovers. The message is not one of safety.

I guarantee nobody was looking at the fighters. And never mind those fighters, f-35's, can deliver bomb payloads, including that nuclear shit.

itself at major public gatherings. For my own part, I make some distinction between displaying the flag -- and displaying military hardware (and purported firepower). I don't see the symbolism involved as quite analogous. And -- while I recognize this is probably a minority viewpoint -- I'm somewhat saddened that the general public seems incapable of making this distinction as well.

It's kind of nice knowing you aren't going to be hit by an incoming airliner. For that reason, I like the assuredness that it can give the crowds with the "your safe, we got this, enjoy the game" message.

I don't condone military showmanship and huge parades to show off the force. I think flying a bomber doesn't give the safety message. It's more showmanship and display of force. That's the distinction I make in the flyovers. I don't think the military and the people who make it up are any better or worse than anyone else. I think as a country we over-lavish that profession with praise. I am glad they are there. I am glad they are doing their jobs. I do wish some of that praise could find it's way to the janitors, trash collectors, store clerks, bus drivers, etc.

I'm appreciative and glad they're there the same as you. I get a slightly different message from the displays -- but, so be it. I can live with your interpretation.

I see absolutely no reason for them, they are wasteful and jingoistic, and I don't care for mixing in the military with sporting events (unless it's the Army - Navy game or Veteran's Day or something).
