Maryland denies Virginia men's lacrosse team revenge, and a shot at a three-peat, in NCAA Tournament blowout

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Virginia men’s lacrosse team had two months to stew over an 11-goal regular-season loss to Maryland back in March. This one, they’re stuck with until next season. ... Senior midfielder Anthony DeMaio scored three goals in the first quarter to send the undefeated Terrapins — the No. 1 overall seed — to an 18-9 win in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Ohio State.
“Maryland’s an unbelievable team and they do such a fantastic job of raising that bar every time we play them,” said UVa sophomore defender Cole Kastner. “I thought we were inching closer to that.” ... All-American Logan Wisnauskas added three goals — moving into second all-time in program history — and two assists as Maryland advanced to the a semifinal matchup Saturday against Princeton in East Hartford, Conn. ... Rutgers and Cornell play in the other semifinal.
The Cavaliers’ quest for a third straight national title died Sunday in front of just 3,684 fans — and more than 100,000 empty seats — at drab, gray Ohio Stadium, ending UVa’s championship reign at 1,090 days. ..“That’s why this hurts, because the ride’s over,” UVa coach Lars Tiffany said. “It’s hard to not have the Final Four be a part of the Virginia lacrosse season. But there’s a reason it’s ending. We just faced, in my opinion, the best team in the last 16 years.”

Delaware scored goals in a pair of spurts on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals.
The Blue Hens needed a third that never came.
Three fourth-quarter Cornell goals spelled the difference as the Big Red dashed Delaware’s postseason dreams with a 10-8 victory at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

Unseeded and unranked Delaware (13-6) had won seven in a row, including stunning No. 2-seeded Georgetown 10-9 last Sunday night in a first-round matchup.
But No. 7-seeded Cornell (13-4) advanced to Saturday’s NCAA semifinals against No. 6 Rutgers at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. Delaware was hoping to repeat the performance of its 2007 team by making the Final Four.
