Europe will require carmakers to install speed limiters from 2022

London (CNN Busines) — New cars sold in Europe from 2022 will have to be fitted with systems to limit their speed.

Under new safety rules agreed by the European Union, all new vehicles are required to have "intelligent speed assistance" systems as standard equipment.

The EU rules don't mandate specific technology for the systems, which can be temporarily overridden by the driver. Some carmakers have already developed ways of using GPS or cameras to detect posted speed limits and make sure vehicles adhere to them.

European Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska said in a statement that 25,000 people are killed each year on European roads, with the vast majority of accidents being caused by human error.

"With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when the safety belts were first introduced," she said.

1. On the roads around here it's not uncommon to see someone going, it must be nearly 60+ in a 35mph

zone. I think it's a good idea.

3. I live near a road just as you described

Speed limit is 35; people driving nearly 60 on it.

On the road are two churches, two community centers (one of which is for senior citizens), a park, and a middle school.

5. It's incredible and so dangerous. In the middle of the night you can hear them really roar by and

it's all residential. They've hit kids before, but nothing gets done. No one wants to spend any money.

7. On many residential street around where I live

the city has installed speed bumps. These are different than the ones you see in parking lots...They are wider so we can go over them at a higher speed...maybe 20mph..but you can't go fast over them so it forces drivers to slow down. Rather cheap to as they are made from asphalt. Again this would only work in residential areas really where there are houses and schools and such and the speed limit is low, like 25mph or so.

2. and just like Seatbelts

Hate to be Devil's Advocate here, but how many decades did it take to get all of the older cars off the road that didn't even offer Seatbelts? Then when seatbelts were first offered, shoulder and lapbelts were separate from each other. It took Volvo to design the 3-point belt that's currently offered Industry Wide. How many years did it take for Airbags. Just being realistic. I know I LOOK for as many safety features as possible in new car purchases, but there's always going to be those that cannot (or will not) purchase a brand new car.

This feature will take decades to become standard fare on every vehicle on the road. Hell, I just had to junk (2018) a 1964 Buick Skylark convertible (engine fire destroyed the car) and the rear seats didn't have seatbelts. The front seatbelts were installed by me in 1984 when I bought the car.
