Giants beat L.A. 3-1, but Brandon Belt breaks thumb

Los Angeles -- We heard it a zillion times. We said it a zillion times.

This Giants' offense will be fine as long as everybody stays healthy. Now, a big piece of this team is not, and its depth soon will be tested.

Brandon Belt will be lost for an estimated six weeks after his left thumb was hit by a Paul Maholm pitch and broken during Friday night's 3-1 victory, the Giants' sixth in eight games against Los Angeles this year. Belt will go to the disabled list for the second time in his career.

Belt will fly to San Francisco on Saturday morning to be examined by a specialist. The Giants then will have a better idea of how long Belt will be out.

The 26-year-old first baseman is a key to the offense as a left-handed middle-of-the-order bat and one of their best defensive players. He was hitting .264 with an .820 OPS and led the Giants with nine home runs, tied for third in the National League.
