Some of the 10 parrots discovered this month in a dusty west Omaha garage had overgrown claws and beaks. The beak of one of the birds was growing sideways, and the bird was unable to close its mouth.
Melody Boyd, 62, has been ticketed on suspicion of cruelty to animals after investigators found the parrots in cages that officials said were overflowing with feces and food waste. Plants had started growing from the accumulated mounds.
If convicted, Boyd faces up to six months in jail, a $500 fine or both.
An anonymous complaint from a neighbor sent investigators to Boyds home near 162nd Street and Western Avenue on July 7. Boyd said investigators initially gave her 48 hours to clean up the birds cages. Two hours later, however, Nebraska Humane Society officials returned and confiscated the birds, she said.
