Superb Owl Sunday IV

A special Sunday event: our fourth annual photographic essay celebrating these magnificent birds of prey. These nocturnal hunters hail from Europe, Asia, North America, and South America, and are captured here in photos from recent years. If you have some time today before the big game (or are skipping the event entirely), I invite you to take a look; it’s always a hoot to put this together.

One evening, I had gone for a walk with my daughter, son-in-law and his mother. We heard "whooing" and looked up and there was a huge great horned owl flying overhead and it landed a little bit in front of us. As we walked by, it flew on and again landed on the telephone wire in front of us and "whooed". This time it stayed until we were right under it and then stayed on a few minutes, looking down at us looking up at him/her, before it flew off into the night. It was a beautiful few minutes. There are lots and lots of screech owls around here, but we don't see these bigger guys very often.
