Josh Allen throws 5 TDs as Buffalo dismantles New England 47-17

The last time the Bills and Patriots met in Orchard Park, Bill Belichick and Co. came out on top in a cold, low-scoring matchup. The only similarity between then and Saturday night was the cold. Josh Allen and the Bills caught fire in the first quarter and stayed hot all game, torching the Patriots 47-17, the most lopsided playoff defeat in the Belichick era, to advance to the AFC divisional round.

Should the Chiefs beat the Steelers on Sunday, the Bills will face off with Kansas City on the road. If Pittsburgh wins, Buffalo will host Cincinnati. The Bills made NFL history in the first half when they became the first team in the Super Bowl era to end each of their first five drives of the game with a touchdown, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

The scoring started with Allen finding tight end Dawson Knox in the back of the end zone with a floating pass that Knox was able to haul in. Patriots quarterback Mac Jones threw an interception in the end zone on the next drive, and Allen capitalized on the turnover with another touchdown to Knox in the other end zone. Devin Singletary rushed for two second-quarter touchdowns, and it wasn’t until six seconds remained in the half that New England goton the scoreboard. A Nick Folk field goal made it 27-3 at halftime. Even with the big lead, Buffalo kept piling on, with three more Allen touchdown passes in the second half. The Patriots’ only responses were touchdown passes by Jones to Kendrick Bourne in the third and fourth quarters, the first two postseason touchdowns of Jones’ career.

Allen finished the game having completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns. The 47 points were the most scored against New England in the postseason since Belichick took over as head coach. The 30-point differential surpassed a 19-point playoff loss to the Ravens in 2010. It was the second-biggest loss of his New England career overall, just behind a 31-point loss to the Bills in 2003.

1. To summarize
Sun Jan 16, 2022, 09:44 AM
Jan 2022

Buffalo:

- Scored a touchdown on all seven offensive drives (excluding kneeldowns)
- Averaged 12.3 yards per pass
- Averaged 6.0 yards per rush
- Did not take a sack
- Went 6-for-7 on 3rd down and the only 3rd down they did not convert was the final kneeldown of the game
- Had more touchdown passes (five) than incompletions (four)
- Gained yards on 49 of 51 plays (excluding kneeldowns)
- Only negative yardage plays were two kneeldowns at the end of the game

Bill Belichick sounded really beat down at his postgame presser:

Some of the tweets in this article really sum up this year's Bills team

2. The Bills were amazing through the entire game

Josh Allen posted a near-perfect passer rating (157.6) as he ripped New England's defense for 308 yards and five touchdowns on 21-for-25 passing.

Wow, just wow.

Was the low yardage catch for the last touchdown (after the receiver almost scored on the previous play).

It looked like 20+ years of frustration coming out in a one big explosion. Absolute domination offensively and a great game defensively. If the special teams did well (except for the placekicker).

I really thought that was going to be a TD...then the cornerback came from nowhere to intercept the pass. It was all downhill for the Pats from there....

Wrt to Belichick's postgame presser....not a whole lot different than the games when the Pats came out on top.

While the Pats got creamed last night, I think rookie Mac Jones is going to be a pretty good QB in the NFL.
