Apes....why?

These things are still found on quite a few road bikes, but what's the attraction? There is no way that steering and handling is not compromised compared to any normal bar. All day rides on the highway are out of the question for anyone who's not a masochist. And they quite frankly look utterly ludicrous. I understand that many want to customize their ride, but why do some want to assume a pull-up position on an otherwise nice bike?

I have aftermarket bars on my street glide that put my hands level with my shoulders and I love em...this on the other hand I can't see being anything other than a fashion statement...oh and in some states are illegal...

Tall Apes like that bike pictured. Went about two miles and traded back bikes. Most uncomfortable riding position I've ever felt, Hands went numb in minutes. No thanks...
