My family and I were flying to Europe for a big trip, while Sputnik was ALSO up there!

1. It was a few days after launch... local paper said we could see it at ( whatever the time was) over

Sure enough. I'm surprised we were able to see something that small. I guess, low orbit and reflecting sunlight off of it.
