Arkansas Senate approves controversial religion bill

(Reuters) - The Arkansas Senate overwhelmingly approved on Friday a bill its authors said is to protect religious freedoms but critics contend could allow business owners to refuse service to gays and lesbians because of their beliefs.

As the bill advances in the Republican-dominated Arkansas statehouse, the governor of nearby Indiana signed into law a similar "religious freedom" bill on Thursday, prompting protests from human rights groups and some business leaders.

The Arkansas measure says "governments should not substantially burden the free exercise of religion without compelling justification."

Supporters have said that a business should not be forced to cater a same-sex wedding if it violates the religious belief of the owner.

A U.S. judge has struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage but the decision has been put on hold pending appeals.

Creeping theocacy? Not to worry. As we have learned right here the nation is moving "forward on women's rights, gender and sexuality equality, voting rights, etc". Yup. Nothing to see here.

I'm not sure if your post is a bit of a slap to all those who have and still are fighting for equal rights. Perhaps I misread your intent. But this is a subject that the GOP has always fought against.
Always attacked one group or another and have finally found a massive voting block who will eagerly cheer for the GOD GIVEN RIGHT to legislate discrimination.
Only thing is, the Hard Right didn't frame it as something NOT about religion at all, but rather the same old hate & discrimination to keep themselves in power over all others.
They found the key to gaining a voting block, by holding the religious souls hostage.
Unlike the Dem Party, the GOP demands or purchases, and gets loyalty.

The groups you mention who have always fought against discrimination, need a unified Party to carry them.
Something I do not see even here on DU.

..what I don't understand.
Absolute control. Do they want a form of govt like Saudi?
Dictator? King?
This organized group has always despised America's democracy. Of, by, & for the citizens.

You are certainly correct about this.
The Supreme Ct appointees by Reagan & Bush Sr says this move to overthrow American govt began years ago. How its evolved to what we are left with today, watching almost helplessly, the gradual elimination of equal rights is unnerving.
How does a society stop that organized movement, when there are so many who applaud it?

We organize, vote, fight against them but nothing will dismantle their forward pace unless there is complete Unity on our part.

and I will be giving the finger to OK, AR, TN, VA etc. along the way.
I will be really packing all my food, so I hope to spend very little in these states. If I could camp I'd
even avoid hotels...I detest the idea of adding any money to the state coffers so that their crazy
"legisatures" can use the bucks to screw people to the wall.
