Vatican defends appointing Chilean bishop accused of hiding abuse

(Reuters) - The Vatican on Tuesday strongly defended its appointment of a bishop in Chile despite protests by critics who have accused him of covering up sexual abuse.

Juan Barros was installed on March 21 as new bishop of Osorno as supporters holding white balloons and opponents carrying black ones shouted at each other during the ceremony in the city's cathedral.

The appointment outraged some parishioners, national legislators and abuse victims who said Barros had protected one of the nation's most notorious pedophiles and asked Pope Francis to rescind it.

Deputy spokesman Father Ciro Benedettini, in the Vatican's first official comment on a case that has divided Chileans, said the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops had "carefully examined the prelate's candidature and did not find objective reasons to preclude the appointment".

on the point from the regulars there.

As to your OP here, I must say you're not being fair to Pope All-Dogs-Go-to-Heaven-Now-Please-Bend-Over.

I, myself, need to see this not only in its original form, but I need to examine the medium the conversation was taped on. I'm sure that if there's not a problem with the translation, there was a warble in the tape, a la Santorium's "blah" people.

All a misunderstanding.

Also, this is a quote by a "deputy spokesman" of the vatican. HARDLY a spokesperson for the Vatican. Or the pope. I mean, what does the Deputy Spokesman's First official comment by the vatican have to do with the pope AT ALL? Heh. Last time I looked, he was Pope, not emperor. He doesn't really have any power in this at all. There are machinations far, far above him that deal with these things.

The jury is still out on this. I won't possibly know what to think until I see at least 15 unrelated google searches of articles with the words "vatican" or "spokesperson" used as search terms posted here. Doubleplusgood if there are some unrelated videos of hymnals and choirs in the mix for good measure

by baby steps! I'm extremely cautiously optimistic that the vatican will be completely turned around soon. After all, the pope hugged an ugly person…and dogs go to heaven!
