Anglican Communion suspends the Episcopal Church after years of gay rights debates

The Episcopal Church has been effectively suspended from full participation in the Anglican Communion, the world’s third-largest Christian denomination, after years of heated debates over human sexuality and other issues.

The Anglican Communion of national churches, which includes the Episcopal Church in the United States, have been affiliated for centuries, but they have struggled to stay unified amid divisions. The 2003 consecration of the openly gay pastor Gene Robinson as the bishop of New Hampshire served as a flash point.

Since that consecration in 2003, the Episcopal Church has upset many other Anglican bodies who saw its decisions on sexuality as a departure from scripture. Last year, the Episcopal Church’s General Convention voted to change canonical language that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. More conservative Anglican provinces have asked the Anglican Communion to discipline the Episcopal Church, the historic home to U.S. presidents and the nation’s elite.

On Thursday, a gathering of Anglican primates in Canterbury released a document stating that the Episcopal Church will not be able to participate in larger decisions in the Anglican Communion for three years.

“It is our unanimous desire to walk together. However given the seriousness of these matters we formally acknowledge this distance by requiring that for a period of three years The Episcopal Church no longer represent us on ecumenical and interfaith bodies, should not be appointed or elected to an internal standing committee and that while participating in the internal bodies of the Anglican Communion, they will not take part in decision making on any issues pertaining to doctrine or polity.”

Shameful.

open-minded Anglican church. Still mired in fundamental bigotry, and hiding behind "god" to justify it.

The horses are out of the barn.

My mother is an American Episcopalian, and has a lesbian minister heading her congregation.
The congregation supports her and they are NOT going backwards.

I know what it means, but I still can't help snickering when I hear it.

It's also very fitting right now.
