Karen Handel to Voter: My Faith Calls Me to Oppose Your Gay Daughters Rights

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/06/17/karen-handel-to-voter-my-faith-calls-me-to-oppose-your-gay-daughters-rights/

Karen Handel to Voter: “My Faith Calls Me” to Oppose Your Gay Daughter’s Rights

When asked about same-sex couples adopting children, something she has opposed in the past, Handel first told reporters that her faith called her “to a very different place on these issues.” Handel, who is trailing Ossoff by a slim margin in the polls heading into Tuesday, doubled down on that answer when she was approached by a concerned mother.

The mother said to Handel:
“My daughter is part of the LGBT community and, as a mom, I’m like, ‘What protections do I have for her having a family in the future, for being able to adopt and have kids?’ There’s part of me that has the conservative nature, but then there’s the other part of me that’s like, ‘I accept my daughter,’ so I’m split and torn.”

Handel, looking and sounding dismissive of the mother, responded:
“Look, I have to be honest, my faith calls me to a different place on the issue. My faith also calls me to be compassionate, so I’ll try to do that.”

To put that another way, Handel’s Christian faith, which most Christians would say is about love and acceptance and forgiveness, compels her to discriminate against same-sex couples and deny them the right to a family. She’d rather let a child go unadopted than putting one in the care of a loving gay or lesbian couple.

It seems that you can't post in DU a new thread without having at least replied to some other threads.
I understand this.
So this is my first reply.
But the reason I signed up is that my roomie came up with the slogan to end all slogans for the Democratic party for 2018 and beyond...

Repeal and Replace the Republicans.

Someone might have already said it, i don't know.
It's short, it's simple and it dove tails nicely into pointing out that they want to take away people's health care.

Sorrry to hijack this small reply in this thread, but I just had to get it out into the cosmic brain and hopefully starting to percolate.

"I'm Andrew Janz and I'm Here to Repeal and Replace Devin Nunes"

MAY 11, 2017

Protesters gathered in front of Congressman Devin Nunes’ office in Clovis on Thursday, upset about his vote to support the GOP health care plan and critical of his handling of the investigation into Russian election interference.

And, to hear from the first challenger to Nunes in the 2018 midterm election, a 33-year-old Fresno County deputy district attorney making his first run for office.

“I’m Andrew Janz and I’m here to repeal and replace Devin Nunes,” Janz told the crowd of about 80 supporters in the Central Valley town outside of Fresno.

“We’re here today because the congressman cast a vote last week for a bill that is a disaster for the American people … and we are here today because Devin Nunes won’t meet with us,” Janz said.

Janz, 33, of Visalia, told reporters he’d never thought about running for office until recently, when national political developments spurred him to get involved. He said he was especially motivated by the actions of his own representative, Nunes, on health care, and the complaint among some locals that the congressman ignored them.

Those concerns and critiques were echoed by the demonstrators.

We'll scratch out the part of the Pledge of Allegiance where it says "with liberty and justice for all". We'll leave in the part about "under God", though, of course.

The preamble to the Constitution will need to be changed to get rid of that "promote the general welfare" stuff. We will decree that the part about securing the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity applies only to certain groups.

The fourteenth amendment has to go, and in spite of the 19th amendment, we'll pretend that the Constitution granted equal rights to everybody right from the beginning.

What the hell, let's just toss out the Constitution, and use the Bible as our governing document instead. We don't need a Supreme Court either; Handel, Pat Robertson, Pence et al are perfectly capable of ruling on what our "faith" requires.

Cafeteria Christians. They take a big helping of what they like (bigotry) and none of the stuff that doesn't appeal to them, like that 'cast the first stone' stuff!

My grandma used this word to describe people who showed up in the front row of church every Sunday and then screwed people over on the other 6 days. She was also the one who told me to avoid stores with the fish symbol in their ads, because "if you have to tell people you're a Christian, you're not showing it by your actions".

Boy, I am glad she's not here to see what we've become.

JFK had to assure American voters that being Catholic would not influence his ability to lead. I liked that when I was 7. I like it now, much better than politicians slobbering about their faith.

Jesus said: Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. Render unto God what is God's. Jesus understood the realities of being human. He gave us a pass on this kind of judgement call.

If somebody is too power mad to understand this simple concept, get off the public stage and join your church choir.

People who think (?) this way have NO place in public life. They are doing nothing but trying to foist their agendas on the public; they have no intention of serving the public. They are looking for theocracy. Here's a newsflash for them: theocracy exists in Iran and Saudi Arabia and Yemen and The Vatican, etc. Go THERE if you are so interested in forcing religion down the throats of others.

As if she's not speaking to adult Georgia women by saying "my faith calls me to oppose YOUR rights".

Under Xtian fascism, faith justifies all sorts of crimes, restrictions and penalties to be imposed on the larger community. Under patriarchy, daughters are the property of parents. Parents decide what the child can have have or do. Handel wants to be the mommy.

Given how far America has fallen, Handel may scrape up enough obedient children of voting age to win.
