Related: About this forumMegachurch gives standing ovation to pastor for him overcoming him raping a minor.
https://www.rawstory.com/2018/01/watch-memphis-megachurch-gives-standing-ovation-to-pastor-after-apology-for-sex-assault/The woman said she was 17 years old and a high school senior when she met Savage, who was then in college and working as a staffer at a Texas Baptist church now known as StoneBridge.
She told the Wartbridge Watch website that Savage drove her 20 years ago to a remote area, where he forced her to give him oral sex, fondled her and then jumped out of the vehicle, fell to his knees and begged forgiveness.
The woman said the incident caused lasting psychological harm, and she has recently filed a police report about the incident.
I took every step to respond in a biblical way, Savage said, reading from a prepared statement. I resigned from ministry and moved back home to Memphis. I accepted full responsibility for my actions. I was and remain very remorseful for the incident and deeply regret the pain I caused her and her family, as well as the pain I caused the church and Gods kingdom.
...
I was wrong and I accepted responsibility for my actions, Savage said. I was sorry then and remain sorry today.
...
I am truly sorry more was not done, Savage said. Until now, I did not know that there was unfinished business with (the victim), so I say today I am truly sorry for my actions 20 years ago. I remain committed to cooperate with you toward your forgiveness and healing.
After reading the statement, congregants rose to their feet in applause that lasted for nearly 30 seconds, and the lead pastor placed his arm around Savages shoulder.
--------------------
He accepted full responsibility, except he kept it a secret and never confessed to the police?
He walked away unpunished from a rape and didn't realize there is unfinished business?
AND THIS GUY IS IN CHARGE OF GIVING MORAL ADVICE???
When medieval Christians wanted to punish themselves for a sin, they joined a monastery or starved themselves or used various kinds of pain-infliction like self-flagellation.
This guy's idea of self-punishment is quitting your job and moving back to your hometown.

(6,066 posts)1. You suppose they've forgiven the woman he raped?

(6,212 posts)2. What he should be doing is time in prison for rape...
instead he gets a standing ovation because he asked forgiveness.

can she bring civil suit for pain and suffering?

(15,026 posts)5. If I remember right, Christ told those on Golgotha with him they'd receive absolution in heaven. . .
if they but confessed their sins and begged forgiveness.
There was no mention made of acquittal from earthly punishment. Hence, they were all left hanging.
Let us repeat what was surely said 20 years ago, "Suck it, Savage!"

He told one of the men -- a thief -- that he was forgiven. He made no "general pronouncements" on sin and forgiveness.
