Conservatives want Catholic bishops to denounce pope as heretic

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A group of 19 Catholic priests and academics have urged bishops to denounce Pope Francis as a heretic, in the latest ultra-conservative broadside against the pontiff over a range of topics from communion for the divorced to religious diversity.

The most prominent of the group is Father Aidan Nichols, a 70-year-old British priest of the Dominican order who has written many books and is one of most recognized theologians in the English-speaking world. The others are less well known.

“We take this measure as a last resort to respond to the accumulating harm caused by Pope Francis’s words and actions over several years, which have given rise to one of the worst crises in the history of the Catholic Church,” they said in a 20-page open letter.

The letter attacks Francis for allegedly softening the Church’s stance on a range of subjects. They say he has not been outspoken enough against abortion and has been too welcoming to homosexuals and too accommodating to Protestants and Muslims.

are pissed off at Pope Francis, and want him removed. That's all.

A tiny group that wants the RCC to revert back to be even more out-of-date and irrelevant than it is.

Who would have thought RW nationalists would bring the world Brexit, Donald Trump, and political extremism overcoming leadership of Italy and elsewhere... Yeah, no risk...just a small group... we can relax

7. I'm content to let Catholics find their own way out of their own mess.

I'm not a Catholic. I'm not even a Christian. I'm an atheist. The Catholic church and its internal disputes are of no concern to me whatsoever. My only concern is with the intersection between the RCC and people who are not adult members of that denomination. That includes that church's hiding of criminal activity against children by its employees and priests.

But, as for its internal conflicts, that's entirely that organization's problems, and none of my concern. At its most liberal, it is still an anachronistic mess with little relevance to society. Let it stew in its own juices.

I know many practicing Catholics (of which I am NOT one) feel rightfully betrayed by the sexual abuse scandals that have failed to bring justice and effective prevention and Francis' failure to go far enough for LGBT and women, but damn, shouldn't Catholics stand up against this RW attempt to take over and depose him?

Nothing will bring down the Church faster than a successful right wing coup. I say that as a former Catholic.

As for its influence you mentioned earlier, look at Poland and weep.

I'll support the destruction of the RCC by any method short of violence. If these American Bishops were to be successful, the church would fall and they would have nothing to take over.

I'll hope for reform from within, rather than anarchy, thank you very much. I'm not so trusting nor receptive to RW ("Populist" ) White Nationalist revolution as you, I guess.
