Atheists register lobbying group to fight church and state issues

http://www.examiner.com/article/atheists-register-lobbying-group-to-fight-church-and-state-issues

JULY 11, 2012BY: ROBERT SOBEL

The issue over the separation between church and state has picked up steam ever since the evangelical Christian wing in the Republican party has grown in numbers over the last few years. While evangelical Christians have had multiple platforms to voice their opinions, atheists and non-believers haven't had the same opportunity, until now.

In an attempt to fight back against separation of church and state issues, a national atheist group has organized a local chapter in Tennessee. The atheist group based out of Washington, D.C., the Secular Coalition for America, has created a lobbying group in Tennessee and plans on organizing groups in every state in the country. WBIR in Tennessee spoke to the executive director of the Secular Coalition for America, Edwina Rogers, who stated that non-believers need a national and local voice and haven't had one due to lack of organization.

"There are 40 million Americans who don't identify with any religion, but our political influence has been limited because we have not been organized."

The Secular Coalition for America decided to start a chapter in Tennessee after the state passed the "Monkey Bill," which lets public schoolteachers question the scientifically accepted theory of evolution. The local group will work to train new members, create conference calls and set up a website and move forward.
