Neo-Liberalism and the Defanging of Feminism

Last edited Tue Jan 14, 2014, 03:25 PM - Edit history (2)

UPDATE: This video has been judged to be too sensitive for this group. It can still be viewed at the DU link below. (I was notified by the group host committee, so no individual member is responsible for this action.)

Take the trigger warning LITERALLY. There are MANY things on the internet I choose not to view due to my sensitive nature. The second half of this came without warning when I watched it. This is such an important issue, I had to push through. I had disturbed nights and frightful thoughts. I DID have a boyfriend who admitted watching violent blow job porn. There is an unfortunate audience. Many times the viewers are young teen boys. Something must be done or the value of women in the world will drop even further.

This is a very quick listen. The second half is sensitive, especially for women.
(Possible trigger warning.)

Neo-Liberalism and the Defanging of Feminism

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1017168960

"From the Personal Is Political to the Personal is Personal: Neo-Liberalism and the Defanging of Feminism." Gail Dines, professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College, and author of Pornland: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality, explores how mainstream feminism has lost its way by fighting for the individual rights of a small group of elite white women instead of the collective liberation of all women. Dines argues that much of what passes for feminism today is focused on the pseudo-empowerment offered to women who conform to the narrow standards of femininity set by the porn culture. She calls for a feminism that is unapologetically fierce in its commitment to radical social change.

And so very upsetting, and I am not sure if it is appropriate for our group without a bigger warning- could you do that Why? Post a bigger warning note? I am just demoralized by it, and cannot even finish it.

I've been out hunting for employment all day and am tired. Maybe I'll watch it a bit later. Oh, BTW, what trigger are we being warned about?

tells a lot about what the current porn world is about and the cruelty and abuse and physical harm only possibly fixed by surgeries.... Oh my I am still not over it and every man I have come across today ( the guys at the irrigation supply store, the guy at the office supply store, etc.) I just think "oh my could any of these people be be watching these horrible things, how could anyone want to see someone injured on purpose?!!!" That this is such a huge and profitable industry based on filming torture is just beyond me. Where is OSHA??? So I could not finish it, perhaps there is some silver lining or something better, but I am ready to haul my tractor down to Burbank ( or wherever these tortured things go on) and just drive it into the buildings .... but my tractor isn't big enough, nor do I have the time or money and my tractor is too old.....But, all that said, I don't really know why this was posted in our group. It is so upsetting and I have no real idea of what I can possibly do about it.

In the early days of the Women's Liberation Movement, male supporters of the Social Revolution had to be content to call themselves "The Men's Auxillary to the Womens Liberation Movement". It wasn't until the early '70's that I, a white male, could call myself a "feminist".

And while my early WLM education held fast through the decades, I haven't been able to call myself a "feminist" for quite a while. This video sounded like an educational experience and didn't disappoint. I had to fast forward through some of her more graphic examples but I got her point. Capitalism exploits women more than men.

I think the culprit is repressed sexuality and capitalism not necessarily in that order.
