Anybody ever been on a pilgrimage?

I have heard about Santiago Compostela for years, and recently saw a segment on it in a series of travel videos about Spain by Rick Steves. I found websites too. I would love to walk at least part of the route some day. Anybody ever done anything like that?

I've been to Walsingham as part of an organised pilgrimage, but this was more a case of driving there for Mass in the late morning and then a procession in the afternoon. When I went to Rome it was part pilgrimage and part holiday, at least in intention.

The people I know who have done a significant walking pilgrimage talk very positively about it though.
