Several religious and gay-rights organizations will hold a vigil in Springfield on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence Ave.

Representatives from Holy Family Inclusive Catholic Community, Call To Action Central Illinois and the Human Rights Campaign Religion & Faith Program will lead those who attend in praying the rosary, followed by community awareness events. The purpose is to call on local, national and worldwide church leaders to return to the roots of the gospel and recognize the humanity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics and their right to seek civil and church recognition of their relationships and their families.

Rosary vigils will be held in six other cities: Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, San Francisco, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Philadelphia. The praying of the rosary will be followed by community events.
