Nienstedt, Piche resign in Minneapolis/St. Paul

Archbishop John Nienstedt and one of his top deputies have resigned their offices amid criminal charges against the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the Vatican announced Monday.

Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Anthony Piche resigned under the code of Church law that allows bishops to resign before they retire, either because of illness or some other “grave reason” that makes them unfit for office.

Earlier this month, prosecutors charged the archdiocese as a corporation for having ignored repeated reports of inappropriate behavior by a priest who was later convicted of molesting two boys.

The charges were filed against the archdiocese and no individual was named in the indictment.

Let us pray for the faithful in Minneapolis/St. Paul, particularly for victims. Let us also pray that those involved in the selection of the new Archbishop may find the guidance they need from the Holy Spirit.

especially in view of the new commission being set to examine these problems as they relate to bishops.

Maybe now the church in Minnesota can heal. Nienstedt represented the worst aspects of the church heirarchy along with Burke and Dolan. Hopefully the church will get an actual leader and not some conservative numbskull. Seeing as how Francis is in charge I'm hopeful they'll get an actual leader.
