Film follows social justice work of several nuns

CHAMPAIGN — Six years ago, Chicago filmmaker Rebecca Parrish became curious about Catholic nuns who were working with former prison inmates to help them pass the high school equivalency exam.

She had heard about the sisters from a friend of hers who was working alongside them at St. Leonard’s Ministries in Chicago.

“This friend of mine was atheist and identified as queer,” Parrish said Saturday at Ebertfest. “This queer atheist friend is a buddy with the nuns. Who are these nuns?”

Curious, Parrish learned more about them by making “Radical Grace,” a documentary that follows the social justice work of several nuns, among them Sister Simone Campbell, CEO of Network, a Catholic organization that lobbies
legislators around social justice issues.
