I have a few new family names to look up plus my moms. We don't know what my fathers family name was because it was changed at ellis island, though I do know his mother's family name.

Do you think this would be worth pinning in the group given that its a resource?

A cool feature for some groups at DU would to have some sort of sub folder system that could include a searchable reference library.

They don't actually "convert" dead people with their baptism rituals, unless you believe their religion is correct, and that you have the opportunity to accept a baptism done on your behalf, after you're dead. Now, as an atheist, I don't think any of this stuff is true, but I don't see the harm.

I had an ex-girlfriend whose son and daughter-in-law became Mormon, and she was troubled by the posthumous baptism thing. I told her that it really was no different than the people of one religion praying for the dead souls of people who belonged to a different religion.

The only way it would really matter is if the Mormons were right. And how many religious traditions (besides those involving reincarnation) give a soul/spirit/whatever a second chance after death in their teachings? All of them that use a heaven/hell model say that when you're dead, it's game over.

that they agreed to stop doing it, out of respect for the wishes of the surviving family members. They probably think that in another hundred years, they can go back to it, and nobody will notice or protest, though.

they are excellent record keepers. In 1000 years what if their records are all that exist and they show Anne Frank died a Mormon and not a Jew? It'll be like they can re-write history.
