The first operational satellite in deep space is really earning its keep.

DSCOVR, or the Deep Space Climate Observatory, captured what may be a never-before-seen series of images during this week's solar eclipse — which was only visible across parts of the western Pacific.

The satellite showed the shadow of the moon moving across the surface of the Earth.

According to NASA's Earth Observatory, the animation was put together from 13 images taken Tuesday (Central time) by NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera aboard DSCOVR.
