(33,643 posts)2. The proof of this supposed fire is ... a bit underwhelming ... still a good watch tho ... thanks!

(51,448 posts)3. I saw something on TV about the fire markings, but there's no
real proof that it happened. Thanks for the video.
I've been hooked on the Titanic since I read "A Night to Remember" back in 1960. Saw the recovered relics in Tampa (?) and even have a lump of recovered coal.

(4,168 posts)5. Many more details at Snopes

The video in the OP has apparently lifted a few broad facts from a more detailed documentary, and Snopes provides a fascinating look at all the arguments and supporting evidence.

Whether the coal fire played a role in both the speed and the structural failure of the Titanic prior to its collision, or whether both mechanisms are needed in concert (or at all) remains an open debate.
That there was a smoldering coal fire on board even before the Titanics maiden voyage, regardless of its contribution to the disaster, however, is a remarkable bit of trivia in its own right.

(47,141 posts)6. I thought it was determined 20 years ago or so
that metal used in hull was subpar/brittle when cold and that was what caused a severe failure on contact.
Only watched a portion of video above.

(216 posts)7. Substandard rivets let hull plates separate upon impact.
At least that was one explanation put forth about 20 years ago. Then about 10 years ago I remember reading that further research had provided fairly persuasive evidence. I too became interested in the sinking after reading "A Night to Remember"

(13,869 posts)8. Only 16 people died on the Titanic
The higher numbers were the Democrats trying to make President Taft (or King whoever in England) look bad. Sad.
