Scientists discovered more than 1,000 octopuses

Scientists discovered more than 1,000 octopuses in what is reportedly the world's largest deep-sea octopus nursery
Michelle Starr, ScienceAlert Oct. 30, 2018, 11:41 AM

In the waters off the coast of California, marine scientists are finding a whole world of cephalopod wonders: in the latest installment, it's a vast number of octopuses huddling over their eggs in the crevices of an extinct underwater volcano.

With an estimated over 1,000 octopuses spotted, the area at the Davidson Seamount has now been confirmed as the largest deep-sea octopus nursery ever discovered.

"This has never been discovered on the West Coast of the US, never in our sanctuary and never in the world with these numbers," Chad King, a lead scientist on the exploration vessel Nautilus, told KQED News.

As they moved their remotely operated underwater vehicle Hercules through the water at a depth of 3.2 kilometers (2 miles), the scientists spotted never-before-seen aggregations of Muusoctopus robustus octopuses.

They've seen us. As opposed to they recognized us by the telltale sounds of our beaks pounding the tree trunk?

Too funny!

Thanks for the reply, 2naSalit. Keep the faith.

Does anyone have an idea of the size of these octopuses? I assume they're full-grown adults.

I see nothing in the text or video to use for judging scaling.

That's my understanding, anyway.

I think I misunderstood the crux of your question. On further examination I don't see any indication of any kind of measurement tool or scale in use. It would be nice to know, however.

Thanks for the reply.
