I was also struck by how I'd never seen Letterman with that particular background, despite how I must've seen his show not too many years later. I was still in elementary school when that interview was done, and I suppose his show didn't quite interest me yet.

(14,852 posts)In regard to Letterman, I just looked up his career. The interview with Asimov happened when he had a morning show! And it was cancelled just three days after that interview of Asimov!
So that's surely another reason that I don't recall that background. I was in school as that show was aired.
Letterman was later given his late-night show in 1982, and I probably started watching some of those episodes about that same year.
