(3,622 posts)are an interesting group of drugs. Some have been successfully used to bring about remission in lymphomas but at a price. At high doses there can be DNA damage, at least in the rat model. The side-effects are tolerable for the most part as long as the drugs are given at low dose. At high doses all hell can break out as far as adverse events.
The HDAC inhibitors open up the DNA around the histones so that genes can express themselves, such as the anti-tumor gene and in breast cancer the HDAC inhibitors can cause the re-expression of estrogen receptor proteins so other drugs can "attack" the tumors. Those drugs are less toxic than the chemotherapy drugs.
