Mesopotamian clay tablet; circular 'Noah's Ark; loading animals 2 by 2

Maybe it was really a giant colander?

Ancient script says Noah’s Ark round
Engineers to follow instructions written 4,000 years ago to build similar vessel

AP JAN 25, 2014

LONDON – Noah’s Ark was a vast boat that saved two of each species of animal and a handful of humans from a catastrophic flood. But forget all those images of a long vessel with a pointy bow — the original ark, new research suggests, was round.

A recently deciphered 4,000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia — modern-day Iraq — reveals striking new details about the roots of the Old Testament tale of Noah.

It tells a similar story, complete with detailed instructions for building a giant round vessel known as a coracle — as well as the key instruction that animals should enter “two by two.”

The tablet went on display at the British Museum on Friday, and soon engineers will follow its instructions to see whether the vessel could actually have sailed.

The boat is also the subject of a new book, “The Ark Before Noah"...

Finkel said the account of the flood and the ark was probably passed along to the Jews during their Babylonian exile in the 6th century B.C. and served as the basis for the Genesis story. Biblical Archaeology Review's Noah Wiener said the cuneiform tablet was created "a full millennium before the Genesis narrative was written down."

But Ken Ham, who founded Answers in Genesis-U.S. and is trying to raise $73 million to build a full-scale replica of Noah's Ark in Kentucky, says it must have been the other way around: The true account must have come first in Genesis, and was corrupted by the time the Babylonians set down their details on the Ark Tablet.

"Because the Bible is God’s inspired Word, it gives us the true account," Ham wrote. "The other flood legends are man’s changed versions of the event called Noah’s Flood, which occurred close to 4,400 years ago!"

Fans of Ham's Facebook page took up the argument and rejected Finkel's claims. "This is just another clever attempt from Satan to try to disprove or distort the existence of the ark," one said. Another wrote, "A round ark would have sunk."

Was Noah's Ark ROUND? 3,700-year-old clay tablet reveals giant boat was made out of reeds and bitumen

Dr Irving Finkel has translated cuneiform text on an 3,700-old clay tablet

The ancient script details the Mesopotamian story of Noah's Ark

The text also contains instructions on how to build an ark to escape a flood

But its describes the craft as being a round 220-ft diameter coracle

The design is very different to the popular imagining of a traditional ship

It tells a similar story, complete with detailed instructions for building a giant round vessel known as a coracle — as well as the key instruction that animals should enter 'two by two.'

The tablet went on display at the British Museum today, and soon engineers will follow the ancient instructions to see whether the vessel could actually have sailed.

It's also the subject of a new book, "The Ark Before Noah," by Irving Finkel, the museum's assistant keeper of the Middle East and the man who translated the tablet.

Finkel got hold of it a few years ago, when a man brought in a damaged tablet his father had acquired in the Middle East after World War II.

The COULD point to this as an example of a "worldwide" record of the Flood. But because the Bible describes a linear ark with specific dimensions and this ark is circular, this must just be a silly made-up story about a big boat rescuing all the animals in the world.
