ARCHAEOLOGISTS INSPECT LISACUL LOGBOAT FOUND BY 12-YEAR-OLD

Archaeologists from the Underwater Archaeology Unit of the National Monuments Service and the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology visited Lisacul on Wednesday to inspect a logboat found on a local lake by 12-year-old Cathal McDonagh.
The team brought the boat ashore once more, where it was recorded, drawn and photographed before being carefully placed back in the water to keep it waterlogged and protected.
While taking a break from his studies last week, 12-year-old Cathal McDonagh was wading in Lough Cloonacolly at the back of the house when he stumbled across the logboat, which was lying in less than half a metre of water. Cathal immediately knew it might be something very interesting and with the help of mother Eileen and father Peter, brother Aonghus (15) and sister Roisin (13) they carefully pulled it out of the water to have a look. Once out of the water, they immediately knew it could be significant and rang the National Monuments Service.
Hollowed from a single oak tree, the logboat is almost five and a half metres in length and a metre wide (0.88m). The front and back of the boat, the bow and stern, do not survive intact and the sidewalls of the boat though worn, survive to a height of 24cm.
