she was cute. I wonder if that's where her name came from? (I mean, not her specifically as in her parents were big Freya worshipers but if the name Freida was derived from Freya)

Luckily, this was before I discovered sex so I never found out if she was especially fertile.

* this was maybe 7th or 8th grade - by date i mean we were "going steady" lol..neither of us were allowed to go anywhere date-like. By going steady I mean we were allowed to sit next to each other at church. I went for supper at her house once and we sneaked a kiss. We got scared we'd get caught though so we went back in the living room and pretended that's where we were all along.

I wonder if she remembers that. I wonder if she thanks herself when it's Friday. She ought to.

...considering the "union" message in the OP, and your post.

When my Mom was about 12 or 13, she had a BFF named Freida. This was in East Jesustan, a Southern cotton mill town.

Freida's parents were divorced, and her Dad was a traveling union organizer in the cotton mills. That was a most unhealthy profession a few decades ago. The pushback from the mill owners was vicious. Though not many people seem to know it, one of the biggest strikes in American history took place at the mills around Gaffney, SC. The strike finally ended when the Governor called in the SC National Guard, and some strikers got shot. In the back. The mill owners also often used the local KKK as their proxies.

When Freida's dad got assigned to a job in North Carolina, he invited her to visit. She invited my Mom, who had never been away from home and naturally pitched a fit to go. After much begging/reluctance, her parents let her.

About a week after the girls came back from their vacation, Freida's Dad was shot and killed, right in his hotel. AFAIK, the killer was never caught.

Full disclosure: given the extracurricular activities of Freida's dad, the killer could have very well been an angry husband/father/brother/ex-girlfriend.

Hearing my Mom tell that story always makes me sad and angry too.

Toast back at ya...
