It's now OK to denigrate an entire group of people by calling them "DU Believers."

Yep, that's right. We can label anyone we don't like a "DU Believer", as if they are some evil sub-group that deserve no respect. You can even start entire Discussion Threads calling them that in the title and attributing distorted and factually incorrect quotes to them all!

So go on! It's cool. Enjoy!

Oh, wait. My mistake. Make that "DU Atheists". THATS the term that is allowed.

At Fri Jan 10, 2014, 12:42 PM you sent an alert on the following post:

I think it's because of the way they act
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=4310517

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

YOUR COMMENTS:

If this posters use of "DU Atheists" is not the textbook definition of both bigotry and a personal attack against an entire SPECIFICALLY IDENTIFIED group of people, what is?

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Fri Jan 10, 2014, 12:54 PM, and voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Based on this jury result, is it ok to now refer to "DU Believers" in such a manner?

Few are bothered about "offending" an atheist in the way that people seem to be terrified of upsetting believers, so the Jury system would not be your friend on this one.

Don't you remember - it's not bigotry if it's used to protect their god?

As an added bonus, you can broadbrush them with whatever straw man position you want, because they make you so very, very angry you see. How DARE they voice their less-than-fawning opinions about religion!

There are DU atheists and DU believers. Those are neutral, descriptive terms.

by calling me a hippie, or a freak, or a liberal, or a femi-Nazi or a tree hugger. Sticks and stones. I will wear whatever label they want to use as a badge of honor.

We all know that the true believers have a problem with anyone calling their ideology into question, and we know that there are more of them than there are of us. I see it the same as trying to argue with a teabagger---it is unproductive. And that is why I don't bother.

I'm also not surprised that none of DU's resident tone nannies--who are quick to dive in headfirst when believers are broad-brushed--didn't (and almost never) say a damned word when a bigoted statement like that is directed at atheists. When shit like "you atheist arseholes" and posts like this are allowed to stand, it's beyond laughable that some believers on DU think atheists are the reason we can't have nice things.

On edit: I've said this before and I'll say it again: the same First Amendment that gives religious people the right to believe whatever they want is the same First Amendment that gives other people the right to say those ideas are unsupported by evidence, indefensible, irrational, or just plain stupid, regardless of how believers feel.

is that I can clearly see who to add to my ignore list. Makes life much less stressful.
