Fri Jul 11, 2014, 01:54 PM
Jul 2014

I just read through the discussion. How revealing, though, that an appeal to authority (Sagan) still seems so convincing to religious believers.

Of course, we all respect Sagan (who was, of course, an atheist), but if he had come out with a statement that e.g. he believed in Bigfoot, the religious believers apparently would think we'd say "Hmm, maybe there is something to this Bigfoot thing", because Sagan said it, whereas in reality we'd wonder if Sagan had gone soft in the head instead.

It's so revealing of how they think.

I would bet that many of us here have our own internal definition and different degrees of non-belief. And yet, the religious people think that they can tell us what we are and how we think...or maybe try to tell us that we really aren't atheists. Makes my head spin.

I know that I am not stepping into that cesspool.

As several others have noted. Just pure flamebait. And IMO, egotism.

Here's a fun exercise: in The Other Group, scroll down to the bottom of the page and see how many threads have been started that got 0 or very few responses.

Some posters - cough - really hate that. So they've learned that a few subjects are just about guaranteed to make a thread go ballistic:

--Richard Dawkins is a poopy-head
--Carl Sagan was almost a poopy-head but publicly said a few things we can distort into non-poopyheadedness.
--misogyny/racism/poor personal hygiene in the Atheist Movement...whatever THAT is.
--isn't the Pope neat?

Etc. etc.

their imaginary friend isn't real.

I don't believe your god exists.
I believe your god doesn't exist.

Subtle wording difference but the first leaves the burden with the believer, the latter puts the burden on me.

It's up to them to prove their invisible pink unicorn fairy leprechaun thunderbird dragon magical dude man bro guy in the sky is real. It's not up to me to prove it doesn't exist. THAT is why they want to shift the burden and pretend we are all making a positive claim that we KNOW no gods exist.

They're tired of playing defense of the indefensible, no doubt. I would be too if I believed in any of that horseshit.

They can't provide a shred of evidence that any of their gods or Great Spirits or whenever the fuck even exist, except in their overactive imaginations, and when they try to argue for the legitimacy of religion in spite of that, all they do is twist themselves into knots. Even the most intellectually presumptuous of that lot in Religion can't engage in their apologetics for long without hitting a wall, and being forced to stick their fingers in their ears to block out the truth.

And those are the most intelligent and erudite defenders of religion to be found on all of DU. Which is a happy thought.

With several strategic Ignores, I've cleaned up 95% of the horseshit in TOG. YMMV, but it's been highly successful from my point of view. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants these types to go away. I suspect if the only answer these people get is from others in the cheerleader circle-jerk squad, they'll be less strident in their hatred.
