(18,219 posts)but I went with Eye of Reason because Ben was one of the Founding Fathers, and they are so important to the argument about the US being a Christian nation. Otherwise, I would have voted for Dragons and Unicorns.

(9,356 posts)Going with Ben Franklin as well.
Just for the 1.5 people who may not know this - Jefferson's original drafts of the Declaration of Independence used the phrase "we hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable."
Franklin allegedly told Jefferson to change that phrasing because it "smacks of the pulpit." Which is how we got the much better "self-evident" in that line. (This scene was used in the great HBO series "John Adams," with Tom Wilkinson playing Franklin.)
Also, the original drafts of the Declaration omitted one of the favorite Fundie talking points - use of the word "Creator." Which somehow PROVES!1! the Founders meant this to be a Xian nation.
Several drafts of the Declaration still exist, and "Creator" was inserted pretty late in the drafting, as I remember.
And as most sane people know - nothing the Declaration says affects U.S. law anyway. Establishing a Xian nation would have to be part of the real US law, the Constitution. Which of course it isn't. It's fun to watch professional liars like David Barton try to slither under that little problem.

(17,505 posts)Which of course does not go to the god a Abraham by default. It could mean Brahma .... or the laws of natural selection or the laws of physics. Obviously, even back then, deliberately vague (if it must be used) so as to include everyone.... whether you agree with them or not.
