"God didn't make a mistake"

Big shocker here, a Texas State Rep from Longview, David Simpson, has proposed a bill to the Texas Lege to LEGALIZE WEED IN TEXAS!

Unfortunately, he cloaks it in a big fat religious context, but hey, if that's what it takes to get the bill passed, then AMEN, brother!! I can compromise my beliefs like anyone else!!

In this case, I can get behind using religion for a public good. Does that make me a hypocrite? Eh! Blow me, Lord!!

HOUSTON - Calling it "a gift from God", a Republican state lawmaker has introduced a bill to completely legalize marijuana possession and marijuana use in the state of Texas.

"I don't advocate the irresponsible use of anything," said State Rep. David Simpson (R-Longview). "But it's a plant God made, he didn't make a mistake when he made it, and government doesn't need to fix it."

Monday, Simpson introduced HB 2165, which he calls "a comprehensive repeal of all marijuana or cannabis offenses."

"I think it's common sense and realization that the war on drug policies have failed. We need to use the plant that God made that is good, responsibly to help people," he said of medical marijuana and compassionate use proposals which are also proposed in the current legislature.

There are, at present, seven other bills devoted to easing marijuana restrictions under consideration in the 84th Session of the Texas Legislature. Simpson's bill is the only one that proposes a full-scale removal of marijuana laws

Fingers crossed. The rest of the story is here

and in this case, I'd be delighted to.

I've used this exact argument with lawnorder Sunday churchgoers and have gotten glazed stares while they try to reboot.

I wish Simpson all the success in the world with this one. Maybe he can get through to them from on high.

(Yeah, I see what I did there)

So are poppies!

And Coca trees!

Not to mention hemlock and oleanders!

All are just lovely to look at too!

(I am all for legalizing pot....lord knows I smoke enough of it! But I hate the "It's a plant! It's natural!" argument.)

and, as such, is impossible to regulate. If I can grow tomatoes in my back yard and set up a stand to sell them, why not pot?

I'm for any argument that works.

yet knowing the other evils Simpson would feel empowered to legislate scares me. OTOH, if it causes a meltdown like the post *another one bites the dust* did, then by all means, i'm all for it!

but if it works to legalize marijuana in Texas, I won't point out the problems with the argument. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Texas could legalize pet rattlesnakes. (Come to think of it, maybe they already have. The statehouse is probably full of them.) This reminds me of the Monty Python parody of "The Good Lord Made Them All."

only take the good parts and discard the rest, which is pretty fucking stupid

pick only the "good" plants that god "made" and leave out the rest. I can guaran-damn-tee you that the Texas lege will NOT be considering legalizing psychedelic mushrooms or peyote or cultivation of opium poppies.

but again, if appealing to the tinhorn god in the sky helps nudge this one across the finish line, go for it.

They didn't need to appeal to superstition to get this passed in Colorado, Washington State or Alaska, but this IS Texas.

I am surprised that any argument is being made for legalization.

Or....since they are so anti-government and anti-regulations, it is surprising that they have any restrictions on the use of drugs.
