Christian Parents Angry That Their Kids Will Learn About Islam in School

Christian Parents Angry That Their Kids Will Learn About Islam in School

If you’re in seventh grade, the Tennessee Board of Education says your social studies class must include discussion about what Islam teaches, how it spread throughout world history, and how Muslims have contributed to mathematics, art, literature, etc. Pretty basic stuff.

But a Christian group plans to hold a silent protest outside Vance Middle School in the city of Bristol today, because they don’t want their children to be indoctrinated in any of this “education” bullshit.

“The protest will be a silent Christian protest with signs and a banner, we hope to have at least 100 people show up,” Emily Kausch, who’s planning to attend, wrote in an email to the Bristol Herald Courier.
The organizer is parent Patty Kinkead, who said she is “sort of the representative for Tennessee Against Common Core in this area.” She said she removed her fourth-grade son from the Bristol Tennessee school system because of Common Core.

“My son did go to Bristol Tennessee Schools last year and then I pulled him out to home-school him,” Kinkead said Wednesday. “I’m involved with Tennessee Against Common Core. I want to actively educate people about what Common Core is and some of the parts of Common Core that are most offensive. One of the most offensive parts is the Islam content that is with Common Core.”

Common Core sets standards. It doesn’t dictate curriculum. You’d think someone vocally opposed to it would know that. But Kinkead doesn’t exactly strike me as someone who puts much thought into this issue. It’s Islam, therefore it’s evil.

What sort of protest signs will her group have, I wonder, to warn parents against the scourge of — wait for it — learning about people with different beliefs, especially when those beliefs have had a serious impact throughout history?

Is it even possible to understand world history without talking about what Islam teaches? Forget the middle school’s curriculum. I’d love to see what she uses at home.

To answer the question about what sort of protest signs they had here are some pics from a local article:

And here is a comment from an obviously well informed and totally rational Christian parent:

Betty Clouse

Carol Leonard Don't you call her a liar! You are the liar what are you a evil troll paid by the Common Core idiots or just plain stupid and ignorant!! If anyone knows the truth about Common Core she does moron. I myself have read filty books that they put in school for kids to read it's like porn and I've read some of it and it's disgusting. Also as Karen has said Islam is NOT A RELIGION they push the Quran in school. Not much is mentioned about God or Jesus but they spend 3 or 4 weeks talking about Islam and the Quaran. GO BACK AND READ UP ON IT BEFORE YOU CALL SOMEONE A LIAR!! You are so wrong saying anyone is a liar about the evil Common Core and Islam. They both are evil! Islam wants all non jihad believers Dead per their Quaran do you not get it. Nope you have no brain to think with you have been brain washed so pitiful!!

Because we kicked Jeebus out of school.

They're not just ignorant they're hypocrites who want to force kids to learn their bigoted religious beliefs in public school.

As an atheist, I see the conflict between Christianity and Islam to be a race to the bottom of stupidity.

I'm pulling my kid out of school because he might learn something.

We execute people for not believing in imaginary beings.

And I'm supposed to respect these idiots.

Don't forget the Jews!

Abrahamic religions are really the lamest. Abrahamic "philosophy"... that Good vs Evil thing, is so sophomoric. They are all worshiping the same imaginary god.

I lump Islam, Judaism and Christianity into Abrahamism. Those are just the 3 main sects of that ignorant, ancient fairytale. It should be taught that way, not as 3 different religions.

As they realize that no, this isn't Jesusland, and yes, their day as the dominant religious domestic paradigm I'd over, ignoring "ya'll quaeda" isn't an option.

They can keep them out of those filty (Betty's word) school libraries but good luck blocking teh interwebs.

Or so they say.

I guess that these parents are afraid that little Johnny might convert to Islam if he learns anything about any other religion.

And speaking of ignorance, that final comment you posted tells me all I need to know. Oy vey, I guess that the punctuation lessons taught in grade school were too far over her head.

but their exta exactia est mentality where they are just using words that the education department has used for policies and making it up to manufacture outrage (where have I heard that sort of thing before?) instead of the real reasons it's not good (Usual sort of thing, test the kids until they drop) just make them look stupid, and other's job much harder.

And my letter home, and a PowerPoint:

We will learn about religions that may be unfamiliar to you. I know you're thinking, "But isn't it illegal to teach about religion in a public school?"

No, it's not. It's illegal to teach you what you should believe, but perfectly acceptable -- and smart in the 21st century -- to teach you about billions of other people's beliefs.

For instance: if I say "Devout Muslims are supposed to pray facing Mecca five times a day," that's perfectly legal. If I say, "Okay everybody, take out your prayer rugs so we can all pray," I'd get fired. And I'd deserve to get fired.

So far I haven't had a problem, but teaching about religions sometimes require me to educate people before I start educating them, if you get my meaning.

This lady's probably just crazy, though.

A few Nation of Islam kids needed a place to pray that they perceived as safe, plus permission to get out of class for a few minutes at noon (good kids, not troublemakers at all).

So who did they come to? Someone who was willing to go to bat for them with other teachers and administrators. You know, the complete atheist, obviously. (To be completely fair, they knew that I'm good friends with a devout Muslim and very close relative of Elijah Muhammad)

Their religion is bullshit, as are all religions. But a child's beliefs? Priceless, and something I'm willing to die for.
