The Scathing Atheist

In the time I've been here, which has not been too often lately, I don't think I've ever seen a reference to the weekly podcast (yeah, I know, ANOTHER podcast) The Scathing Atheist. In the latest podcast - 288: Abandoned Edition - they address the PA grand jury report on clergy abuse. I love their "don't hold back" attitude.

The "About" page from The Scathing Atheist

The Scathing Atheist is a weekly podcast dedicated to the harshest of criticisms against faith and religion. Firmly entrenched in our conviction that truth and rationality are virtues worth fighting for, we feel no need to apologize for our venomous characterizations of religion and its role in society.

What’s more, we firmly support the right of every man and woman to worship whatever sky-buddy they choose to, but only if it comes with the caveat that every man and woman has an equal right to say that Jesus sucks dingo balls. And he does.

We promise to keep the faithless entertained and informed while keeping believers infuriated and annoyed. We promise to shine the light of reason on the unwiped crevasse of blind allegiance. We promise to treat the rampant encroachment of superstition into our government and culture with the type of acidity and incivility it deserves. We promise to refute the feeble intellectual defenses offered for devoting oneself to sophomoric, antiquated mythology. And we promise to do all of that while still maintaining a liberal dosage of fart jokes.

Hopefully, in so doing we can accomplish 2 goals. The first, clearly, is to push religion further into the margins of civilization. The second, and far more realistic, is to draw some of the trolls away from the more qualified and educated bloggers so that they won’t have to waste their time deciphering the grammatical jack-assery that betrays the true believer.

Actually heard Noah Ludgeons live at a Humanist meeting. Have you ever listened to their God Awful Movies podcasts where they critique Christian movies? Laugh out loud funny. They also do a Skeptocrat podcast which is more tuned to politics. The laughter between Noah, Heath and Eli is so cathtartic for me. Always better to hear bad news with a healthy dose of humor. Love these guys and oh yeah, I am NOT an atheist (more of an agnostic) but I can still appreciate listening to them. Highly recommend these guys for the non-believers among us. Warning: their humor can be dark or offensive so not for the faint of heart.

Who's sophomoric? I'm sorry, all we need is another adultescent shoot for the lowest common denominator feed trough for the mind then associate it with atheism. If it's your thing have at it, but I don't think it gives freedom from religion anything... useful... at least as presented.

I'm sorry that my description may have caused you to jump to your conclusion. I would suggest that instead of going by my humble opinions, you listen for yourself and then decide whether or not he is for you. He has enough of a following that I'm sure it won't matter to him either way. When you listen through the jokes (which as I said, I enjoy - you might not), you will hear some intelligent guys that know their stuff. But to each his own. Do they mock religion and all the damage it is currently causing - yes, yes they do. Are they angry about the religious Right hijacking America - yes, yes they are. And they make no apologies for it -hence the name: The Scathing Atheist. That is why I added the warning that they may not be for everyone. I'm also sorry that you felt the need to call me sophomoric.

The sophomoric comment comes from the Scathing Atheist about page supplied in the post. They are calling believers sophomoric and I was calling their contradiction since their own jokes sound sophomoric.
Unless you wrote the about page I couldn't be calling you such a thing.

I'm all for intellectual discourse on the merits of religion, but I find there is plenty of room for ridicule too.

I’ll even get to see them live next month. While they’ve definitely got dirty minds and jokes and sometimes brutal humor, I think Noah’s diatribes do a great job of stressing the seriousness of the day’s problems.
