Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumWell, I learned something new today.
Saying that somebody is exhibiting the behavior of something is equal to calling them that something. Thanks DU jury system!
Excuse me, I have to go take by blood pressure meds now...

(22,340 posts)As soon as he starts asking you if you said something, he's starting an alert-fest and is trying to get as many runs at you as he can. I just started a thread about it in Meta if you want to give your thoughts on the tactic.
Sorry you got locked out of that one. It was uncalled for especially given that he called someone a troll in a different subthread in that OP.

(5,963 posts)I may respond, but not right now anyway. Honestly, I'm having a hard time believing there isn't a strong bias against us here on the DU. Especially when jury decisions get handed out in such an inconsistent manner, with the inconsistency always seeming to be against us.
But it could be that I'm just really angry about the entire situation right now.

(6,271 posts)It's just natural for any majority to put down a minority and then not even notice or admit it's doing it.
Minorities are irritating. It's just weird, tho, put enough of them together and you have the Democratic Party.

(22,340 posts)At Mon Jul 9, 2012, 11:21 AM you sent an alert on the following post:
Reading DU is a hard habit to break.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1218&pid=34999
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
YOUR COMMENTS:
Regardless of his feelings toward the OP, saying that the OP is a troll is certainly something we don't do on DU and it makes DU suck a little more.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Mon Jul 9, 2012, 11:32 AM, and voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: my understanding is the hard line on calling out trolls went away when du3 arrived.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

(5,963 posts)Thanks for sharing this. I can't say I'm surprised by this in the least.
Warren Stupidity
(48,181 posts)'cause that's how we roll on DU3.
A little reflection would conclude that we roll this way (if we do) because jurors vote this way.
The other jurors were too embarrassed to comment.

(13,029 posts)but there are certain posters that it just doesn't pay to get into those kinds of extended exchanges with. It's galling to leave it alone, I know, when they're spouting the kind of crap they do, but there's no more point in trying to get them to admit to anything than there is in trying to get the nut job in the psych ward to admit he's not really Napoleon. Ain't gonna happen. If there's a substantive point to be made, best to just make it to the extent needed for the sensible people who may be following the thread to see what's what, and then declare rounds over. Yeah, they'll always try to get the last shot in, no matter how completely you've answered them, but anyone who considers that a victory for them is pathetic and not worth trying to convince of anything, anyway. Once they've departed from substance (which is usually early on), they have no purpose or goal but to agitate, get attention and get under your skin. Don't give them that satisfaction, and definitely don't let what happened to laconicsax happen to you.
Just my 2 cents (or more). Take it for what it's worth.
And yes, the jury system sucks, but that's another story.

(5,963 posts)...and obnoxious exchange, something I generally try to avoid. But that in and of itself should not have been enough to warrant having one of my posts hidden, which is what really got me irritated.
But it's over and done with now. Lesson learned; some groups of people on these forums get treated differently than others when it comes to the jury system. It's sad but true.
EDIT: Other lesson learned; some people just aren't worth responding sometimes.

(6,452 posts)If you look at the Religion group, nearly all of the posts near the top were posted by two different (religious) DUers. It's been made pretty clear that we're not welcome in that group, and that we're barely tolerated as Progressives.

Rob H.
(5,349 posts)Yep. They still want us to vote Democratic (and really, the thought that Robme might win the White House and take us back to the bad ol' days of Dubya is too terrifying a reason not to vote Democrat/Progressive), but, OH, MY GOD, DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR LACK OF RELIGIOUS FAITH BEFORE THE ELECTION OR YOU'LL ALIENATE POTENTIAL DEMOCRATIC VOTERS!!1!!!1!eleventy!!!11!
That pervasive attitude toward atheists (among other things) is the reason why I haven't donated to DU this year. "Shut up, but give us your money" just doesn't work for me.

(5,963 posts)I haven't been a star member of the DU for years now, and it is in large part because of the way some "undesirable" minorities are treated here.
Of course, tho, we'll all be told we are simply being overly sensitive or that we have a "persecution complex" or some other bullshit that allows them to keep on doing business as usual without having to face the uglier side of things here on the DU and in the party in general.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)or whining, but no one would say that about someone who is bullied, or gay, or persecuted for their political or religious views...but atheists are supposed to be different? Would anyone here tell an abused woman to suck it up?
JNelson6563
(28,151 posts)But here in the real world I was mighty alone out here (as an atheist) until I found my local Dems in 2000. My gawd our local party is infested with heathens! I knew then I was home.

skepticscott
(13,029 posts)and pretty ironic when certain people there whine that the group has been "taken over" by atheists.

(146,254 posts)When someone engages you in a subthread back and forth thing, stop participating after two posts in the subthread. Deny that person the thing he or she wants by refusing to participate. Once I started doing that, several people who used to try to provoke me into a hidable post stopped trying.
Two replies in a subthread and out. It works.
skepticscott
(13,029 posts)the first time they lie, make shit up, or throw up a passive-aggressive one liner with no substance, game over.

(146,254 posts)I won't continue beyond that point in most cases.

(26,355 posts)Just make one or two comments, and ignore the usual suspects when they try to instigate a flame war.
I just don't have patience for flame-wars - we're not going to convince them - I've debunked them a hundred times, and using logic on them 101 times isn't going to persuade them.
If you can't make progress talking to them, talk around them.

kdmorris
(5,649 posts)That's what I learned on my one hidden thread. It was OK for him to come to our group and keep pushing our face in the laconicsax banning, but when I told him to "go the fuck away", it gets hidden, even though he'd provoked me several times.
DISCLAIMER: I GET that it was rude. I seriously, really do. But context is everything...
