If, for example, it's a prayer for something like a calm mind and freedom from anxiety, it can have a beneficial effect on the person praying. Prayers for patience, acceptance and other such things can also work, if the person praying believes they will. It's sort of a spiritual placebo, with similar effects.

Prayers about stuff external to the person praying, though: Ineffective in the extreme and a waste of time. Much like homeopathic medicine on real disease.

It's worse than not doing shit. It makes you think you have done something, making it less likely you'll actually do something.
