Snow and thunder make for a pretty rare storm in the Texas Panhandle

A deluge of snow. Booming thunder. Rippling flags and high winds.

These extreme weather events are rarely seen at the same time and they're even rarer in Texas during the fall. But residents of Amarillo, Texas, experienced a thunder snowstorm on Thursday, bringing early snow and a weather phenomenon to the Texas Panhandle.

In Amarillo, videos show flags rippling in the air as snow fell, with thunder roaring in the background.

The event, known as thundersnow, occurs when the upward motion of air convection happens during a winter storm. The effect is a thunderstorm that results in snow instead of rain.
