Frosty air mass spills over eastern U.S. with freeze, lake-effect snows.

The first signs of winter were manifesting themselves on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday morning proved the coldest of the season for millions of Americans in the central and eastern Lower 48, with freeze alerts in effect for parts of 11 states at dawn. Lake-effect snow showers were streaming off the Great Lakes, the flakes a sign of what lurks ahead in coming weeks and months.

The chilly temperatures, 5 to 10 degrees below average, are threatening crops where the growing season is still ongoing, and Tuesday night marked the season’s first frost or hard freeze for many in the Appalachia and Mid-Atlantic.

Temperatures Wednesday night into Thursday morning will be just as cold, if not colder, in the South and along the East Coast.
