Flood warning for southern Finland as river levels rise

YLE NEWS
17.4. 05:50

A flood warning has been issued for areas of southern and southwestern Finland on Sunday and Monday as heavy rains and melting snow will cause river levels to rise.

The warning was issued (in Finnish) on the vesi.fi (siirryt toiseen palveluun) website, which is jointly run by the Finnish Environment Institute and the Finnish Meteorological Office as well as by the nationwide network of Ely centres.

Heavy snowfall over the winter months has increased the risk of spring flooding across the country and flood peaks are expected in the coming days and weeks.

"The spring floods are high because the winter snow accumulation has been very large, even double that of normal," Kari Rantakokko, a water management specialist, told Yle.
