Thousands without power as winds and heavy rains wallop East Coast

NEW YORK -- A flood warning was in effect Sunday evening for the tri-state area as a storm system brought heavy, pounding rain and dangerous wind, CBS New York reports.

As of 9 p.m., the region was still dealing with torrential rains -- brought on by a cold front from the west and tropical moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Philippe.

The Associated Press reports that southern New England appeared to suffer the brunt of damage -- more than 40,000 Connecticut customers were without power late Sunday night.

CBS News has learned that there are more than 148,000 people without power in the Northeast as of late Sunday night.

30K without power. Considerable local flooding. A lot of down trees and power lines to clear before the outages can be delt with. Heavy winds and rain won't stop until this afternoon. It may be the rest of the week before we're back to normal. Going to make due and cope mode.

And 15 minutes to get to work in Central NJ today. No limbs or power lines down, but the pooling water seriously slowed us down this morning.

Stay safe out there!
