funny- this memory is almost 60 years old but clear as if it were yesterday.

a certain asshole who would always ask me "why aren't you smiling?"
or
"are you mad?"
or some variant.

others did too, but I remember this one cuz he was relentless...

of course I wasn't mad or unhappy, I just didn't paste a "smile-y" on my face!
arg- still makes me mad.

so annoying.

A wise friend said "Just laugh. They won't know you're laughing at them."

An office manager where I used to work once told me I needed to stand in front of a mirror and practice smiling. Needless-to-say, I didn't act on that advice.

I had forgotten about this group, so it's been a LONG time since I visited. I've subscribed now, so I'll see all of you around sometime. Nice to know there are kindred spirits.

Another wise friend just mention's that someone he knows is having a party.

"Well, there's a party in ..."

"So and so is doing something somewhere ..."

and they don't really care.
Where I live (apartment building) I pass a lot of people as I go to and fro.
Sometimes someone will say, "going for a walk?" if i'm carrying a book, "Going to the library?"
etc.
These are older people who mostly don't go anywhere, so I just mumble something unintelligible and keep walking.
I understand their need for conversation, even a brief one, but I also respect my need to not always be interacting with people every time I come or go.

It's easy enough to smile or simply nod and agree when you're moving toward the elevator.

But I'm thinking of the office and I'm in the 'cube' with no escape. And civility requires something, you know, non-violent.

yeah that's tough.

I remember when I worked in an office - once I had 2 people near me, I had to listen to them talk about the bible.

and I used to hate those two standard questions:
1. what are going to do this week-end?
2. What did you do this week-end?
