South Dakotans, your online price tag is about to get steeper. Here's why.

PIERRE — South Dakotans who shop online could see their price tags increase beginning November 1.

That’s because the South Dakota Legislature on Wednesday passed and Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed into law a bill that would require large-scale online retailers without a presence in the state to begin collecting state sales tax.

While online buyers were supposed to kick back use tax due on their online purchases, only 81 did so voluntarily. And beginning later this year, South Dakota buyers will see the tax added to their totals automatically.

The decision came as part of a special session in which the House of Representatives approved the bill on a 62-4 vote and the Senate green-lighted it with 30 voting in favor and 3 against. Two senators were excused.
